Narrator - The great Innu gatherings had two main objectives: to avoid inbreeding by mixing bloodlines, and to socialize among distant communities, thus providing an opportunity for young people to meet.
It should be remembered that, prior to the era of Catholic priests, a good hunter could have many wives and children. Since the Innu spent most of the year in the bush, with only their close family members and a few neighbours, opportunities to meet were rare. Innu Nikamu, which has been in existence since 1984, is the most contemporary version of these gatherings.
