Missionaries

2:16 min. - “The missionaries came here and started baptizing us and changing our names.” Evelyne St-Onge, Mani-utenam Innu

Transcription

Evelyne St-Onge - Missionaries arrived, the idea in mind to baptize our people; they gave us new names: French names, Breton's names, like St-Onge, Vollant, Jourdain, or even translated our names into there language.
Narrator - My son, you are very well here in the bush. Your territory is beautiful and big, I don't want to disturb you. I come to teach you religion and I will make you a name. A name like ours. That is the one you will use from generation to generation. For begin, you will teach to us your language and we teach you our prayer. Later it's in our language that we will teach them to you.
Evelyne St-Onge - Priests abolished our rites and rituals; that they considered to be witchcraft. Innus gave up their beliefs and listened to these priests. We renounced our own ethics and took on Christian’s. To deny one self is destructive.
Music - Philippe Mckenzie
